Do you need this?
Most people don’t. With Start with Windows on, Nubi runs every scheduled task whenever your PC is on. A cloud computer makes sense when tasks must run at night or while you travel, or when you want Nubi to have a screen of its own.
What you rent
- A Windows virtual machine (VM) from a cloud company such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Lightsail or AWS EC2, Google Cloud, Vultr or Hetzner.
- At least 2 virtual CPUs and 4 GB of memory. Windows Server 2022 or Windows 10/11 both work.
- Cost depends on the company and the region, often from about 15 to 40 US dollars a month, because Windows licences are included. Check the price page before you create anything, and set a budget alert.
Set it up
- Create the Windows VM and set a strong password. Allow Remote Desktop only from your own IP address if the company offers that option.
- Connect with Remote Desktop (search for it in your Start menu) using the address, user name and password the company shows you.
- Inside the VM, open this site, download Nubi and install it like on your own PC.
- Connect Nubi to your account, add your AI key and turn on Start with Windows.
- Sign in to the websites Nubi should use, inside the VM’s browser.
- Add your tasks in Your day.
Keep the screen awake
Nubi needs a desktop session to click and type. When you close Remote Desktop with the X button, the session can lock. Two simple options:
- Minimise the Remote Desktop window instead of closing it, on a computer that stays on.
- Or set the VM to sign in automatically after a restart, and set its power plan to never sleep. Your cloud company’s help pages explain automatic sign-in for Windows.
Plans and accounts
A Nubi plan works on one computer at a time. If you move Nubi to the cloud computer, connect it there; your own PC stops. You can ask us for more computers on one plan.
Safety
- Use a long, unique password for the VM and turn on the provider’s two-step sign-in.
- Keep Windows updates and Windows Security on in the VM.
- Delete the VM when you no longer need it, so it stops costing money.
